Aganool #18: Take control

Layoffs, AI, restructures — you can’t dodge them forever

Imagine you are walking peacefully on the road and suddenly a car races towards you out of nowhere. You start running but realize you can never outpace the car.

You see a fence nearby and decide to jump over it so you can be safe. But a few minutes later, the car appears on this side of the fence too and throttles towards you.

With no other way, you start running again but not for long. The car catches up and with a slight bit of intuition you turn back head-on and make a jump to miss the car narrowly.

You realize in your head that the move was luck and you cannot keep doing this forever. The car makes a turn to finish what it started.

But at that point you realize there is no one in the driver’s seat.

You have two options now. Either you can count on your luck and dodge the car forever or find a way to get into the driver’s seat and take control of the car.

Ironically this is the decision faced by almost every corporate employee in today’s age. A peaceful job with yearly increments is a thing of the past which many people are scared to acknowledge.

Most employees still believe the system will take care of them. They wait for their turn at the next promotion cycle. They wait for managers to hand them tasks. They wait for clarity in times of change. And in that waiting, they remain pedestrians.

But here’s the truth: the car will keep coming. Restructures, layoffs, budget cuts, automation, AI. You can try to dodge them, but luck doesn’t last forever.

The only way forward is to stop running and take the driver’s seat.

And this is where Valuepreneurship comes in.

Last week I wrote about the two broad kinds of people in the corporate world: followers and value creators.

Value Creators thrive in today’s world because they:

  • Understand the Value they bring
  • Know how to communicate it
  • Don’t confuse the system with survival. They know a job is only a channel to provide value and there are multiple other ways to monetize that value.

And moving from an Employee to a Valuepreneur is a mindset shift.

  • Instead of thinking, I get paid for my role, you start thinking, I get paid for the value I create.
  • Instead of asking, How do I finish this task? you ask, How do I make this task worth more?
  • And instead of tying your life to one stream of income, you start thinking in terms of increasing the “cart size.” How can I deliver more value, in more ways, to more people?

That’s entrepreneurship at its core. Which is why I call this approach Valuepreneurship.

You can either keep running from the car, hoping corporate decisions and luck saves you one more time. Or you can take the wheel, steer your own path, and decide where you’re going.

This is your opportunity to take control.

Issue 17 September 12th 2025 Why some careers collapse in layoffs and others take off. ↓ I’ve realized that over the last two weeks, my newsletter eerily depicted a gloomy picture of the corporate world and our relationship with it. But the fact remains. Many employees confuse their identity with their job title and struggle when that title is stripped away. The solution often starts with a shift in mindset. Because the reality is simple: there are two broad kinds of people in the corporate...

Issue 16 September 6th 2025 Climbing the Corporate ladder feels like progress, but at what cost? ↓ I recently came across the news of a Bengaluru man spotted near a traffic signal holding a handwritten note in English and Kannada that read: “I don’t have job, no house, please help me. I have 14 years working experience in banking.” This act in general is not new to me. In a world of LinkedIn “Easy Apply”, where candidates just press apply even without going through the entire job advert, the...

Issue 15 August 28th 2025 How over-identifying with your skillset makes you fragile in the age of AI. ↓ One of the biggest traps of modern work is mistaking a job title for an identity. Ask someone ‘Who are you?’ and most will answer with their job title. We do this because we want to make it easier for the other person to recognize the skills we bring, what we do, who we represent, and what could be common points of interests to discuss further. The job title is a mask that makes you...
